Pharmacology - An Update for the
Dental Team

OBJECTIVES:
1. Recognize the specific dental
treatment modifications necessary to prevent
complications in patients with major
cardiovascular or central nervous system disorders.
2. Prescribe and explain antibiotics
pre-medication based on new or updated guidelines
3. Modify dental treatment for patients
on new chronic medications for diabetes, asthma,
gastroesophogeal reflux disease (GERD),
and rheumatoid arthritis
4. Identify the chronic medications or
dietary supplements likely to precipitate major
interactions, dental antibiotics,
analgesics, local anesthetics, and oral or parenteral
anesthesia agents.
Dr. Baker is an Associate Professor in
the department of Oral Pathology, Radiology, & Medicine at
the College of Dentistry & in the Clinical Pharmacy Division
of the College of Pharmacy & has been on the Collegiate
faculty for 28 years. She holds a MS degree in clinical
pharmacology & therapeutics. She directs the operation of an
in-house pharmacy & drug therapy consultation center which
serves faculty, staff, students, & patients every clinic
day. Ms. Baker lectures both nationally & internationally &
has published numerous articles & abstracts. Ms. Baker
currently serves on the editorial board of the Journal of
Academy of General Dentistry.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
The purpose of this course is to
identify new drug-related problems encountered in dental
practice and to outline practical management solutions.
Extensive handouts will supplement discussions of intra-oral
drug effects and treatment modifications involving medicated
or allergic patients. Throughout the program, primary
emphasis will be placed on developing consistent strategies
for treating medically complex dental patients. An extensive
and very current handout will greatly enhance the chair side
value of this fast-paced, comprehensive and practical
course.
Emergency Response In and Out of the
Office

OBJECTIVES:
1. Define and discuss the Dental Team’s
role in Disaster Preparedness.
2. Gain knowledge about how the dental
team members can contribute to the safety and
well-being of the community during an
emergency.
3. Discuss various disasters which may
affect the Community of the Dental Team and
how to respond to each type of
disaster.
Dr. Larry Williams is the Department
Head of Health Promotion & Analysis at the Navy and Marine
Corps Public Health Center. Dr. Williams is a recipient of
the FAGD, MAGD & LLSR Awards of the Academy of General
Dentistry as well as successfully completing his
requirements for the American Board of General Dentistry.
Dr. Williams has given many lectures throughout the United
States regarding Emergency Response / Disaster Preparedness.
Most recently, he has given lectures at the ISDS Annual
Session & CDS MidWinter Meeting.
This lecture will discuss a variety of
areas where dental team members can respond to an emergency
in their community. Also discussed will be types of
emergency response, preparedness, resources for preparedness
materials and education as well as discussion regarding
PARKING: Available behind Hoag
Hall. No permit is necessary. Do not park in the clinic
parking lot. You will be ticketed.
