AGD Seminars for 2009:
Modern Medical Management of the
Treatment of Caries
Friday, March 13, 2009
8:00 am - 4:00 pm (Registration at
7:30 am)
Speaker: Steven Steinberg, DDS
Maggiano's, Oakbrook, IL
7 hours lecture credit
Description: Paradigms are the maps we use to interpret
and understand reality. Many of us have a map for
understanding and treating tooth decay that is outdated.
Evidence based research has taught us that caries is a
reversible process caused by several risk factors and specific
types of bacteria. The attendees will lean how to
diagnosis and treatment plan using a medical approach to this
infectious disease.
Questions that will be answered by this seminar:
-
What is
the concept of Caries Manage-ment by Risk Assessment (CAMBRA)?
-
Why is
CAMBRA something we must apply to and document for every
single patient?
-
Can tooth
decay be treated with medicine instead of a drill? If
so, which medications?
-
What new
technologies are useful and practical (DIAGNOdent, QLF,
etc.)?
-
What are
the roles of fluoride, sealants, MI paste, and xylitol gum?
Finally, an
introduction to Evidence Based Dentisty will be presented.
It is entitles "How Do You Know?" This presentation will
empower you to evaluate the accuracy of this and other
presentations aw well as articles that you might read.

Medical Emergencies in
Dental Offices
Friday, May 15, 2009
8:00 am - 4:00 pm (Registration at
7:30 am)
Speaker: Robert Bosack, DDS
Maggiano's Little Italy, Schaumburg, IL
7 hours lecture credit
Are you really prepared? We intend to explore the
issue of medical emergency management form several unique
perspectives . . .
- If an adverse event occurs, what exactly will you think
of do?
- What will your staff do?
- If paramedics are summoned, what will they do?
- What is the standard of care?
Fortunately, most adverse reactions in the dental office can
be anticipated by DIRECT QUESTIONING of each patient: Do
you "pass out" easily? When was your last seizure?
Simple tools to screen each patient and take advantage of the
opportunity to optimize their health prior to dental
intervention will be reviewed in detail.
Unfortunately, some reactions will be life-threatening and
unexpected. In these cases, WELL-REHEARSED PROTOCOLS and
CLEAR ROLE ASSIGNMENTS will easily guide the dental team to
appropriate early diagnosis with immediate triage.
At the end of the presentation, you and your team will be
able to:
- Understand the importance of planning for emergencies
and the need to frequently practice protocols
- Adopt a systematic approach to assess your patient's
ability to withstand dental procedures
- Recognize the signs and symptoms of medical emergencies
- Remember straightforward treatment protocols for
presenting symptoms
- Assess the need for additional help; making the call to
911 and plan for events that will follow
- Administer a subcutaneous injection
About the Speaker:

University and completed his post-graduate training in Oral and
Maxillofacial Surgery at Cook County Hospital in 1982. He
